Learning in the Background

One of the stranger joys of homeschooling:
10yo and I were working through invariants, when 6yo, half-listening, said "that reminds me of chess variants" and walked off to play.
Later, while the 10yo was explaining a mirror clock puzzle, the 6yo (not even looking at it) came back and said: "I have a math problem. What is this number upside down?" (a bunch of 1, 8, 6, 9…)
So the child you think is not paying attention, might actually be doing some interesting learning in the background.
